BRINGING BACK BARFLY.
REFRESHED BRAND. SAME SOUL.

Protecting a piece of music culture.
Barfly has long been one of Britain's most iconic grassroots music venues. A place where future global headliners played their first London shows and audiences discovered artists before the rest of the world caught on. When new ownership decided to bring the Barfly name back after years as Camden Assembly, the challenge wasn't to reinvent a legendary brand. It was to understand what made it culturally significant in the first place.
Through workshops, research and an exploration of the venue's role within Camden's independent music scene, we developed a refreshed identity, tone of voice, campaign platform and digital experience that honoured Barfly's heritage while confidently looking to its next chapter.
The Challenge
Some brands earn the right to evolve. Others earn the right to stay exactly where people remember them.
Barfly belonged firmly in the latter camp.
For generations of gig-goers, musicians and promoters, Barfly wasn't simply a venue. It represented a moment in an artist's journey. A first London show. A first sold-out room. A place where careers quietly began before the arenas, the festivals and the headline tours.
The temptation with a project like this would have been to redesign everything. Instead, we challenged ourselves to understand what truly gave Barfly its cultural value. Through workshops with the new owners and extensive research into the venue's history, we uncovered that the brand's greatest asset wasn't its visual identity. It was the role it played within the UK's grassroots music scene.
The challenge became one of restraint. How do you bring back an iconic name without becoming trapped by nostalgia? How do you respect decades of history while ensuring a new generation feels equally welcome? And how do you create a flexible identity capable of representing indie bands, electronic artists, DJs and future genres without losing the authenticity that made Barfly so loved? The result
Our response was an evolution rather than a reinvention.
Rather than replacing the original Barfly logo, we carefully refined it. The iconic fly was subtly redrawn, the typography tightened and the spacing improved, preserving the character people already knew while giving the mark greater consistency across digital and physical applications. It wasn't about making it look new. It was about making it work harder.
The wider identity draws inspiration from the DIY spirit of grassroots music culture. Layered textures, understated typography and an intentionally unpolished visual language echo the flyposters, gig flyers and lived-in character of Camden itself. Every decision was made to feel authentic rather than designed, creating a system that feels equally at home promoting a breakthrough indie band, an electronic club night or a surprise set from an established artist.
This thinking extended beyond the visual identity into the wider brand narrative. Together, we developed the campaign platform 'Before the arenas. They were here.' A simple but powerful expression of Barfly's role within music culture, celebrating the venue not as a place to look back, but as somewhere audiences continue to discover what's next.
The same thinking carried through to Barfly’s digital experience. The existing website was slow, outdated and increasingly difficult for the team to manage, so we rebuilt it from the ground up in Webflow. A flexible CMS puts control of events and content back in the hands of the Barfly team, while reusable components make the platform easy to manage and evolve without ongoing developer support. The result is a fast, feature-rich website that works harder behind the scenes while giving the revived Barfly identity a digital home that feels every bit as distinctive as the venue itself.

The approach the Hey! What? team took combined both visual and narrative elements to ensure that both worked together. Working through a series of workshops where a variety of internal views could be aired, Hey! What? were able to tie together the different views our team had of the show into a cohesive foundation for the future of Europe's biggest outdoor jazz festival.
The rebrand work done provided the foundation for one of the festival's strongest ever years in terms of ticket sales, and engaged an entirely new audience in the event, shown by an almost 50% growth in social following since the creative refresh. We look forward to continuing to evolve the festival with the Hey! What? team over the coming years!
